I just watched it again, for the first time in almost 14 years. Hader is 100% right about it, and his description is beautiful, but even his description can’t really capture it. It’s too simple. I Highly recommend watching Akira Kurosawa’s “Ikiru.”
But yes, “learning on the fly.” Nobody likes having a story “explained” to them. They just want to hear the story!
I’ve got a lot to think about now. And man. Kurosawa. Even with my horrible Japanese abilities, I find myself amazed and torn up. He tells a story with the film alone. I daresay even without a recognizable language, the viewer would still be moved, and follow, for the most part. But of course, I did see it with subtitles first. This time none, and it moved me more than the first time.
Maybe that’s what 14 years does…
